Market Regime Indicator — VIX, Advancers, Rates
Is the market calm or nervous today? Our market mood answers that in one word: Calm, Normal, Nervous or Fearful. Next to it are a few other market readings and a 0–100 Fear & Greed score.
Market mood
CachedNormal
Set by the fear gauge (the VIX) against four fixed cut-offs: under 15 Calm, 15 to 20 Normal, 20 to 25 Nervous, 25 or more Fearful. The VIX is a daily close, so the word changes at most about once a day.

Fear & Greed
From 0 (Extreme Fear) to 100 (Extreme Greed).
A saved snapshot that can be an hour old or more. The regime panel in the app shows the latest reading when you open it, with the Fear & Greed dial and how each part of the score adds up.
What the regime shows
Two different things share this page. The market mood sums up in one word how calm or nervous the market is: Calm, Normal, Nervous or Fearful. Most days land in Normal or Nervous.
The Fear & Greed score runs from 0 to 100, from Extreme Fear to Extreme Greed — the same names CNN’s well-known version uses. It looks at a few market readings, such as the VIX and how many stocks rose today.
The label and the other numbers on this page can disagree — the mood can read Calm on a day when most stocks fell. We show both rather than hide the difference.
The VIX, the 10-year Treasury yield and the US dollar index come from the St. Louis Fed’s free public data. The advancer count and the sector ranking are worked out from our own list of scored stocks about once a minute during US market hours, from prices delayed about 15 minutes. The market mood page in the app adds the last 30 days and what changed since last week; Pro adds the Fear & Greed breakdown.
